"The Research Program of the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland"

Abstract :
スイス・ポールシェラー研究所(PSI)の所長であるアイヒ ラー氏に、PSIで行われている様々な最先端の研究について解説していただきます。 PSIは、第三世代放射光施設 SLS と、1メガワットを超 える世界最大強度の陽子サイクロトロンを擁し、SLSやスポレーション中性子源 SINQ による物質生命科学の研究、大強度ミュー粒子・パイ中間子ビームを用いたミューオン科学(μSR)や素粒子物理の研究、 さらにはエネルギー研究や放射線医療が行われています。これら様々な研究に興味のあるすべての方のご来聴を歓迎します。
PSI is the largest national laboratory of Switzerland and operates a Synchrotron Light Source (SLS), a Spallation Neutron Source (SINQ), and high intensity pion and muon beams for Muon Spin Rotation (MSR) and Particle Physics. The research is in physics of condensed matter, material science, structural biology, and fundamental questions in particle physics. It is also engaged in energy research (nuclear and non-nuclear) using complex facilities towards efficient, environmentally friendly and reliable energy supply. The nuclear infrastructure is used in medical applications such as radiopharmacy and proton therapy.

すばる望遠鏡の主焦点広視野CCDカメラSuprime-Camは10mクラス望遠鏡では世界で唯一の広視野カメラとして活躍している。 また最近はSuprime-Camの16倍の視野をもつHyper-Suprimeの開発を提案しているところである。
Suprime-Camをはじめ、Hyper-Suprimeや世界のモザイクCCDカメラのCCD制御・データ取得システムついて紹介する

"B physics beyond CP violation: Semileptonic B decays"

Abstract :
The success of the B Factories at SLAC and KEK has advanced our knowledge of CP violation, a prerequisite for the creation of the matter-dominant universe. Steady increase of data has brought a new era of precision CP measurements, in which the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is scrutinized for signs of New Physics. One of the crucial information, surprisingly, comes not from CP violation but from studies of semileptnic decays of the B mesons. I will discuss how various measurements of the B semileptonic decays mesh together to determine the size of the smallest CKM matrix element |Vub|, and how such measurements are made possible through progresses in the theory of B decays.

Abstract :
The calorimetric determination of the absolute neutrino masses by means of cryogenic detectors could play a significant role, being in principle able to investigate the 0.1 eV/c2 range. However, the question whether the development in the new technique will allows to confirm the expected performance is still open. The seminar will outline briefly the historical framework and the main achivements on precise beta spectroscopy of 187-Re. Further, will be reviewed other related topics that can be investigated with the same experimental methods, as well as the Fine Structure of the Beta Decay and its application to the matter science.

"Measurement of the Polarisation Dependence of Charged Current Cross Section in e+p Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA"

Abstract :
The first measurements of the single differential and total cross sections of the charged current deep inelastic scatteing for Q^2>200GeV^2 in e^{+}p collisions with longitudinally polarised positron beams at a centre of energy of 318GeV are performed. This measurements are based on two data sets with opposite signed polarization(P). These integrated luminosity are 22.7pb^{-1} for P = +32.6+-0.9% and 16.4pb^{-1} for P = -40.2+-1.2% taken by ZEUS detector from 2003 autumn to 2004 summer. The polarised cross section is significantly different from the previously measured unpolarised cross section and consists with the absence of right-handed current in the Standard Model. The results are compared with the Standard Model. A lower limit of the mass of right-handed W boson is derived.

"The ATLAS Experiment getting Ready for the LHC Physics"

Abstract :
The world-wide ATLAS Collaboration is completing the construction of the components for its ambitious detector for the LHC physics. The installation and the commissioning in the underground cavern has started. The ATLAS detector is on schedule to begin exploring the exciting LHC physics potential when the first collisions will occur in summer 2007. The status of the ATLAS project and its physics goals will be presented.

"New results from the top quark"

Abstract :
The top quark with its mass of 178 GeV/c2 is the heaviest known elementary particle. Its production at the Tevatron collider is dominated by QCD processes while its decay is a electroweak process. It is therfore the ideal candidate for tests of both interactions and for searches for not yet observed proceses beyond the standard modell.
In this talk I will report the results from the D0 experiment at the Tevatron on the production of top quark pairs and the measurement of the top quark mass. I will further present the latest limits on the cross section for single top quarks which improved dramatically with respect to the Run I results and will report on the search for new couplings in the decay of the top quark.
