My Research Activities: Past, Present, Future

                    (Tomio Kobayashi)

Carrying out the particle physics experiments using the world highest energy
colliding beam accelerators in international collaborations as a member of
ICEPP/Univ. of Tokyo.

e+e- Collider Experiment JADE (1977-1984)

In JADE experiment using PETRA(20〜40 GeV) at DESY(Hamburg)
・ construction of EM calorimeter(〜3000pcs of lead-glass counters)
・ study of QCD(discovery of gluon, measurement of coupling constant, ‥)
      ・ search for top quark
・ search for SUSY particles(scalar electron, photino)

e+e- Collider Experiment OPAL (1980-present)

In OPAL experiment using LEP(100〜200 GeV) at CERN/Geneva
・ construction of EM calorimeter(〜10,000pcs of lead-glass counters)
・ determination of particle generation number
・ detailed study of the Standard Model
・ indirect evidence of top quark
       ・ indication of GUT
       ・ search for Higgs
       ・ search for SUSY particles

Preparation of pp Collider Experiment ATLAS (1990-present)

In ATLAS experiment using LHC(14 TeV) at CERN/Geneva
・ proposal, R&D and construction of Thin Gap Chambers as forward muon trigger
・ R&D for construntion of LHC data analysis system
・ studies of physics at LHC

The central part of my present and future research activities is the LHC experiment.
The highest energy run of LHC is now scheduled to start in autumn 2009.
The
ATLAS experiment is expected to produce exciting results such as:

    ・ Search for Higgs
(The result of LEP experiments tells us that the mass of the Standard Model
Higgs particle is less than 〜200 GeV, so that it should
certainly be obseved
        at LHC
.)
    ・ Search for SUSY particles
(After the precision measurement of the coupling constants at LEP, it becomes
probable that SUSY would come out at TeV region, in which case many SUSY
        particles
will be detected at LHC.)
    ・ New phenomena from extra-dimensions
(Super string theories require the existence of extra-dimensions. Its effect may
        manifest at TeV region.
One may find some excited states of the graviton or
mini black holes, ‥. Who knows!)

In addition, one can make various studies at LHC: detailed study of top quark,
measurement of CP-violation in b-quark decays, new phenomena from dynamical
symmetry breaking, ‥.
