スイス・ジュネーヴにある欧州合同原子核研究機構（CERN）は、世界最大規模の大型ハドロン衝突型加速器（LHC）を構える国際的な研究機関です。その使命は、「宇宙の起源」を解明するという人類共通の知の探究に留まらず、科学を通じた技術開発や国際協力を推進するとともに、世界中から優秀な研究者や技術者を受け入れ、若手人材を育成するハブ機能と多岐にわたっています。
このほど、Mark Thomson所長の来日にあわせて、東京大学で初の講演会を開催する運びとなりました。就任後のインタビューで“Building a culture for success（成功のための文化を築く）”と表明したThomson所長が、20年以上続いた「LHC実験」から2030年開始予定の「高輝度LHC実験（HL-LHC）」に切り替わる大きなターニングポイント、新物理発見のチャンスをどう捉え、次に構想している将来加速器計画で組織的な卓越性をどうデザインしていくのかなど、CERNの素粒子物理研究のビジョンをお話しいただきます。
東京大学の学生や教員、研究者コミュニティに向けてどのようなメッセージを発信し、ディスカッションを展開するのか、どうぞご期待ください。

“Particle Physics and CERN : Today and Tomorrow”

アブストラクト

This is an exciting and pivotal time for particle physics, where decisions that will be taken in the coming years will shape the long-term future of the field. In this colloquium, I will give a personal perspective on the status of particle physics and the prospects for the next ten years and beyond. I will discuss the importance of the Higgs boson and will give particular emphasis on the role of CERN in our exploration of the fundamental nature of the universe, both today and tomorrow. This colloquium is intended to be accessible to a wide audience.
