Research

The experimental particle physics is the main research interest of MINOWA group.

The main stream of the field has been often called the High Energy Physics because they use high energy particle accelerators for the experiments. However, you already see the financial as well as the geographical limitations of ever inflating accelerator projects. The collaboration size of such large experiments often exceeds 500 or even more. On the other hand, there has been a problem among the participating physicists and graduate students that the enthusiasm of the individuals decreases as the size of the experimental collaboration increases.

We propose to explore new experimental methods exploiting state-of-the-art techniques which are not necessarily connected with the conventional particle experiments. The scale of the experiment is necessarily not so large if we do not use the energy-frontier accelerators.

Followings are our current projects.

Compact mobile anti-electron neutrino detector

NEW!

A compact mobile anti-electron neutrino detector with plastic scintillators can be used to monitor the power and plutonium content of the nuclear fuel in a nuclear reactor. It is to be deployed outside of the reactor containment with no disruption of day-to-day operations at the reactor site. This unique capability may be of interest for the reactor safeguard program of the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA).

Solar hidden sector photon detector piggybacked on Sumico helioscope

NEW!

The existence of the hidden sector photons and other hidden sector particles is predicted by extensions of the Standard Model, notably the ones based on string theory. The hidden sector photon is expected to come from the direction of the sun. It would be produced in the solar core or in the space by oscillation of the ordinary photon, and can transmute into the photon again in a long vacuum chamber in the laboratory. A photon sensor in the chamber would readily detects the ordinary conversion photon.

Detecting atomic nuclei with a mass spectrometer

Direct dark matter search experiment with a recoil-direction sensitive scintillation detector

The earth, together with the whole solar system, rotates around the galactic center through the galactic dark matter halo with velocity of about 230 km/s. Therefore, an observer on the earth should feel the wind of dark matter.

Direct dark matter search experiment with a cryogenic bolometer

Crystals are cooled by a dilution refrigerator down to an absolute temperature of 10mK. It gets slightly heated when its constituent atomic nucleus is kicked by a supersymmetric dark matter particle flying in the vicinity of the earth.

Solar axion search experiment with a superconducting magnet

A telescope-like superconducting magnet is directed toward the sun aiming at a detection of a light neutral particle called the axion.
