DASP Experiment at DORIS
It was in 1972 that physicists at Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo,
participated in planning an experiment called DASP
at an electron-positron
collider DORIS, which was then being built at
the DESY (Deutsches Electron Synchrotron) laboratory in Germany,
to investigate the fundamental structure of the elementary particles.
This decision was based on an early recognition that
electron-positron collider experiments have a high potential of
finding new particles as well as of making unambiguous measurements,
which was not yet generally understood at that time.
In 1974 the High Energy Physics Laboratory (HEPL),
the predecessor of ICEPP, was established in
Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo, with a term of five years.
HEPL took charge of the design of the experiment,
the construction of the electromagnetic shower counters, and
the development and construction of the proportional counters.
The experiment started
just after the historic discovery of the charm particles.
Its important achievements included:
- Discovery of a new particle Pc
- Confirmation of the tau lepton
- Studies on the decays of the charm particles.
The electromagnetic shower counters constructed by HEPL
proved essential in these studies, and
the HEPL physicists made primary contributions in the physics analyses.
