There are frequent services every 20 min. or so, and you can buy tickets at the JR-Kyoto station. Buy the ticket for fastest service "Nozomi" train with seat reservation (there are wagons without seat reservation as well). The train stops at Tokyo-station, thus you need to change to JR-lines or Tokyo-Metro to reach your hotel. JR-Shinkansen http://english.jr-central.co.jp/index.html Time table http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/index.html e) Tokyo Metro There are 1 or 2 day ticket, airport +1-day ticket etc. http://www.tokyometro.jp/en/ticket/value/travel/index.html But perhaps you just need to buy simple ticket each time during the workshop. % ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Venue Here is the map of Univ. of Tokyo, Hongo campus, for workshop location, root from Ueno, workshop dinner place, http://www.icepp.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/hc2012/HC2012_map.pdf % ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) Currency Japan is still a county of cash in many places. Exchange rate is about 100 JPY/EUR, 80 JPY/USD. Avoid money exchange at air-port, but you should be able to find good exchange rate with buy/sell = +-2% margin at major cities. % ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Plug Japan is A-type with AC 100V, 60Hz in Kyoto and 50Hz in Tokyo. http://www.icepp.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/hcp2012/travel.html#electricity You should be able to find plug-exchanger at air-port, otherwise you rush to world-famous electric city Akihabara in Tokyo. You might be interested in buying Travel Universal Plug Adapter. % ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) Tourist/Restaurant Information Go Tokyo http://www.gotokyo.org/en/index.html Restaurant http://www.gotokyo.org/en/tourists/restaurant/index_restaurant.html Restaurant with English menu http://www.gotokyo.org/en/tourists/restaurant/restaurant1.html GuruNavi (Gourmet Navigator) http://www.gnavi.co.jp/en/ http://www.gnavi.co.jp/kanto/tokyo/ (in Japanese) Tabelog http://tabelog.com/tokyo/ (in Japanese) TripAdvisor http://www.tripadvisor.com/RestaurantSearch?geo=298184&q=Tokyo%2C+Japan&cat=&pid= Or ask your Japanese friends what you want to eat and where you should go ! % -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
